Nexon confirmed no continuation of official global service after the shutdown — accounts and progress on the global version were permanently closed.
The game struggled with player retention in the West, partly attributed to grindy, pay-to-win-leaning systems that didn't land the same way the original 2D MapleStory did.
A Korean version has continued to exist separately under different regional terms (historically requiring a Korean resident registration number), so availability varies sharply by region.
The sequel's 3D voxel-based redesign was a major departure from the original MapleStory's 2D side-scrolling style, and that shift didn't win over the original's fanbase.
