Instancing

A technique that creates separate copies of an area for one party, raid, match or limited group of players.

How instancing works

Instances help games control encounter pacing, population and performance. Dungeons and raids often use them, while open-world zones may use channels or shards for similar scaling reasons.

Strengths and tradeoffs

Instancing enables carefully designed encounters and reliable access. Heavy use can make a world feel less socially continuous because players in different copies cannot see each other.

What to verify in a game

Terminology is not perfectly standardized between studios or communities. Use MMOFinder’s profile fields as a discovery aid, then review current official documentation for exact rules, regional availability and recent system changes.
