Dynasty Warriors Online

Dynasty Warriors Online, known in Japan as Shin Sangoku Musou Online, was a massively multiplayer hack-and-slash game developed by Omega Force and published by Koei (later Koei Tecmo), based on the long-running Dynasty Warriors franchise and set during China's Three Kingdoms period. Players created their own avatar, chose a weapon from the existing Dynasty Warriors cast, and joined large-scale multiplayer battles across game modes like Confront, Search and Destroy. The game first launched on PC in Japan in November 2006/2007, with Aeria Games publishing an English localization in the West starting November 2010; that Western version was shut down January 1, 2014, while the Japanese release continued receiving major overhauls (rebranded Dynasty Warriors Online Z in 2013, with character models later updated to Dynasty Warriors 8 and then 9 assets) until Koei Tecmo finally ended the Japanese service on February 24, 2022, after more than 14 years of continuous operation.

Why you might like it

  • Large-scale, structured multiplayer objectives (Confront, Search and Destroy) built directly on the beloved Dynasty Warriors 'musou' hack-and-slash combat gave the game a distinctive large-army-battle feel rarely replicated in other MMOs.
  • The Japanese service's remarkable 14+ year run, receiving major content overhauls that kept pace with mainline console releases (upgrading character models and movesets through Dynasty Warriors 7, 8 and 9 assets), reflects unusually deep long-term publisher investment for a licensed franchise MMO.
  • Letting players choose from the extensive existing roster of Dynasty Warriors historical Three Kingdoms characters gave immediate access to a large, well-loved cast rather than requiring an entirely new original character roster.

Things to consider

  • The Western English localization was permanently shut down on January 1, 2014, and the Japanese service (renamed Dynasty Warriors Online Z) ultimately ended on February 24, 2022, so there is no official server left to play on in any region today.
  • Players interested in the modern Dynasty Warriors series should note that Koei Tecmo has shifted its multiplayer online strategy toward separate mobile titles (Dynasty Warriors: Unleashed, still active in Japan, and a separate Dynasty Warriors 9-based mobile game) rather than a PC/console MMO successor.
  • As with most licensed franchise MMOs tied to a single publisher's long-term support decision, no fan-run private server or community revival was found, so interest in this game today is necessarily historical.
